Experiencing Washington, D.C.: A Personal Perspective

Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, is known for its rich history, iconic landmarks, and a robust cultural scene. It’s one of my favorite places to visit because it’s just a 90 minute train ride from the Wilmington, Delaware train station on Amtrak – the easiest way to get there if you live on the East Coast of the United States.

During my corporate career, I was in Washington on business just about every month.  I’ve watched the Washington skyline expand with new businesses, new Federal buildings, and more over the years.  Accessibility is really easy here, with one exception – it’s not always easy to get an accessible taxi unless you book one in advance. Luckily, I found a reliable company, Royal Taxi years ago and have used them ever since.  In fact, I became friends with one driver in particular, Saleem, and he was my driver for years and remains a friend.

Keep in mind that museums, monuments, and other sites are spread all over the place but the sidewalks are all accessible.  If you travel to D.C. in the summer months, be warned that it gets very hot and humid there and if you are outside for any extended period, it will wear you down – especially with the distance between museums and other monuments.
