A Guide to Success

The entrepreneurial spirit knows no bounds. It’s fueled by determination, vision, and an unwavering work ethic. Regardless of physical challenges, individuals with disabilities are proving that they too can excel as entrepreneurs. In this inspiring journey, I’ll take you through my life, sharing how I’ve not only defied the odds but also created an inclusive environment for children with disabilities through art, music, and dance.

Statistics for Inspiration

While the world of entrepreneurship is often seen as challenging, individuals with disabilities are carving their own paths to success. According to recent statistics from 2024, there are over 1.3 million self-employed individuals with disabilities in the United States. This growing trend reflects the determination and resilience of entrepreneurs like me, who are breaking barriers and embracing entrepreneurship as a means of self-expression.

Turning Passion Into A Business

Tip 1: Follow Your Passion

My journey began with a deep passion for music. At 17, I was preparing to attend Berklee College of Music when I was struck by a rare condition called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). This life-altering event could have defined my future, but instead, I chose to embark on a path of self-discovery and entrepreneurship.

Empowering Through Art, Music, and Dance

Tip 2: Create a Positive Impact

The Grace Fisher Foundation (GFF) is a testament to my determination to make a positive impact. Through GFF, I provide an inclusive space for children with disabilities to explore their creativity through art, music, and dance. This foundation not only enriches the lives of these children but also allows me to continue my passion for creating music and films along my journey.

Composing Music Against All Odds

Tip 3: Adapt and Innovate

My resilience shines through my ability to adapt. Despite being paralyzed from the waist down, I found innovative ways to compose music using a mouth stick and technology. My compositions, such as “A Critter Fable—a short film.,” have garnered acclaim and recognition.

Recognizing My Contributions

Tip 4: Embrace Recognition

My entrepreneurial journey is punctuated with achievements. I’ve had the honor of winning numerous awards, including Best Composer at Venice Shorts, the Women Filmmaker Award at Best Shorts Competition, and Best Score at the Los Angeles Film Awards. My work has resonated with audiences and fellow artists alike.

Sharing My Story with the World

Tip 5: Tell Your Story

My story has been captured in the documentary “Amazing Grace,” directed by Lynn Montgomery. The film explores my journey of resilience and serves as an inspiration to all. It highlights the importance of overcoming obstacles and the impact one individual can make on the world.

A Day in My Life

Tip 6: Establish a Routine

My daily routine is a testament to my determination. I start my day early, facing the challenges of my condition with unwavering commitment. My routine-driven lifestyle is key to my success, allowing me to balance entrepreneurship and my personal life effectively.

Finding Inspiration in the Everyday

Tip 7: Stay Inspired

Despite the challenges, I find inspiration in the everyday moments. My day starts early, and it usually takes me a while to get up and into my chair for the day. But there’s no “off” day for me. I thrive on routines, and they are essential for my success. By 8 p.m., I often humorously admit that I turn into a pumpkin and need to be in bed.

Laughing Through Challenges

Tip 8: Lean on Loved Ones

In this journey, I’ve realized the importance of having friends and family by your side. They are the ones who keep you grounded and remind you that you “still have things to contribute” and “stuff you can do.” And yes, they also add a generous dose of humor to life!

Tip 9: Surround Yourself with Supportive People

My family and friends have been my cheerleaders throughout this journey. They’ve shown unwavering support, believing in me even when I doubted myself. Their encouragement has been invaluable, pushing me to step out of my comfort zone and live life to the fullest.

My entrepreneurial journey is a beacon of hope and inspiration for individuals with disabilities worldwide.
