Why I Chose Dubai
A Journey of Growth, Community, and Opportunity
As a motivational speaker and an advocate for accessible travel, I’ve tackled numerous adventures and challenges. Having made my mark in the United States, I was ready for a new challenge and a fresh start. This search for growth and progression led me and my business partner to Dubai. Known for its futuristic cityscape and strong commitment to accessibility, Dubai was an immediate standout during our brief nine-day exploratory trip.
More than just a dynamic metropolis, Dubai embodies safety, collaboration, and accessibility—qualities that resonate deeply with me due to my mobility needs from Hanhart syndrome, which left me with no legs and one arm. Here, I found a city not only equipped to accommodate my lifestyle but also poised to amplify my efforts in promoting accessible travel globally. This move aligns perfectly with my drive for continuous personal growth, community building, and creating opportunities that transcend physical limitations.
A Collaborative Culture
Dubai is a place where people genuinely want you to succeed, and that collaborative spirit is incredibly refreshing. Relationships here are built on shared values and mutual respect, rather than status or competition. I’ve been struck by how people here align their actions with purpose and integrity. This city has a unique energy that values collaboration, which is so aligned with my personal philosophy. It feels like a place where I can not only grow but also contribute to the success of those around me.
A Welcoming Home for Expats
One of the aspects I appreciate most about Dubai is its diversity. With 90% of the population being expats, the city is a beautiful mix of cultures, traditions, and backgrounds. Despite being new to the city, I’ve felt a warm sense of belonging. The level of customer service here is outstanding—everyone I’ve encountered has been eager to help, making my transition smooth and enjoyable. The spirit of hospitality is palpable, and it’s a place where I feel valued and supported.
High Standards and a Commitment to Quality
Dubai operates on a whole different level when it comes to quality and standards. Everything here is top-tier, from the food to the infrastructure. For example, restaurants are held to strict quality standards, and if they don’t meet them, they’re simply not allowed to operate. Even in the middle of the night, I can find healthy meal options—something that makes a big difference in daily life. Dubai’s commitment to quality extends to accessibility as well. I’ve found numerous ramps, accessible bathrooms, and other accommodations that make it easy for people like me to get around. There’s a sense of pride here in creating spaces that are both welcoming and functional for everyone.
A Visionary Leadership
The leadership in Dubai is one of the aspects that impressed me the most. The sheikhs here are committed to the prosperity of their people, viewing residents as an extension of their family. This forward-thinking mindset is a breath of fresh air and aligns with my own values. Here, there are no gatekeepers. If you want to collaborate or connect with someone, people are willing to make introductions and set things in motion quickly. It’s a place where I feel empowered to make an impact and contribute to the community.
A Compelling Future: Moving Forward in Dubai
Since arriving, my business partner and I have been busy setting new goals and creating a compelling vision for the future. We’re focused on building relationships, attending expos, and learning the lay of the land. Our goal is to establish a solid foundation here, not just for ourselves but also to inspire others to see the possibilities in this city. From finding the right accessible accommodations to exploring healthy dining options, every day brings new experiences and opportunities to grow.
Respecting Local Customs and Culture
Part of feeling at home here involves respecting the culture and traditions. I’m learning to adapt, from simple gestures like understanding local customs to picking up common phrases in Arabic. Small efforts like these show respect for the local culture, and they’ve made a significant difference in how people connect with me. I’ve even started learning about the local religion, Islam, to better understand the community I’m now part of. It’s a humbling and enriching experience, one that has made me feel even more welcomed.
As I continue this journey in Dubai, I’m excited to share more of my experiences with the Journeyable Community. This city has already begun to show me a side of the world that’s both inspiring and full of potential.
